The United Kingdom and the United States have finalized a important commercial pact that will guarantee no tariffs on British medicine products going into the American market.

The Terms of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has pledged to raise funding on pharmaceuticals through the NHS. This commitment ensures that duties on these crucial products will stay at zero for a duration of three years.

This deal follows previous statements to dramatically increase import taxes on branded pharmaceutical products, with figures floated reaching 100%.

"This agreement with the Britain strengthens the international landscape for new treatments and establishes long-overdue equity to American-British medicine commerce," a release noted.

Economic Significance

Medicines are one of the Britain's biggest export categories to the US, which is clearly the biggest destination for large companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data reveal that in the 12 months prior to last September, the UK exported drugs valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure made up a significant portion of all goods exports in that period.

"This agreement safeguards work, increases funding and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a international leader for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Key British Pledges

The pact entails several specific changes from the UK:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the affordability limit at which it deems new treatments to be unaffordable by a quarter.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to increase total NHS spending on drugs from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6% over the coming ten years.
  • Refund Ceiling: The percentage pharmaceutical firms must refund to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at fifteen percent. Last year, refunds were more than 20%.

Recent Tensions

This agreement comes amid a long-running dispute between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over spending levels and regulatory access.

The disagreement were heightened by assertions that American patients were paying a premium for the same drugs than patients in the Britain and the EU.

In recent months, several major pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been paused or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar funding commitments have been directed toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS had to spend more on medicines, noting that its expenditure on drugs had decreased as a share of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
