The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
