The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
