The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
